Juan Manuel Fangio, famous race car driver

Born to humble origins in a remote corner of Argentina, Juan Manuel Fangio started racing primitive self-prepared cards in incredibly arduous South American long distance races at the age of 11, making his later Formula One successes seem like child's play. A pioneering proponent of the four-wheel drift, spectators found him wonderfully entertaining to watch, negotiation corners in spectacular yet completely controlled power slides. He became even more of an international celebrity in 1958 when he was kidnapped by members of Fidel Castro's revolutionary movement to draw attention to their cause. As was the case with all who met him, his captors were charmed by Fangio and they released him unharmed.
