Sammy Baugh, famous football player

During his 1937 rookie season with the Washington Redskins, Sammy Baugh played quarterback, defensive back, and punter, set a league record for completions, and threw for a league-high 1,127 yards. His 1943 was even better and he led the league in passing, punting, and interceptions (catching them, not throwing them!). Baugh is credited with making the forward pass an integral part of the offensive play in the NFL.
